Prolonged Intensive Neurorehabilitation, PIN

If there is still no desired result after the EIN program, the patient continues towards the PIN program. During this (maximum 2-year) care and treatment program, further work will be done on restoring consciousness of the person with a Prolonged Disorder of Consciousness.

What exactly is the PIN treatment program?

Prolonged Intensive Neurorehabilitation (PIN) is a treatment program for people with acquired brain injury (ABI). The PIN care program serves as a manual for institutions that provide rehabilitation to people with a Prolonged Disorder of Consciousness (PDOC) and have not achieved full consciousness during Early Intensive Neurorehabilitation (EIN). The goal of the EIN treatment program is to improve patient awareness.

Who is the PIN treatment program for?

The target group of the PIN program is all people with a long-term disorder of consciousness, after they have already followed a treatment program in the EIN program, without having reached full consciousness.

What phases does the PIN program have?

The PIN programme has four phases:

1. Sign-up phase
This phase is aimed at making the process from EIN to PIN efficient so that treatment can be continued immediately. A preference is given for a healthcare institution and together with the social worker of the EIN organization, we look at which institution best suits the patient.

2. Recording and observation phase
During this phase, data is collected about the patient. These are analyzed and from this analysis a tailor-made treatment plan is determined. All this in collaboration with the loved ones.

3. Treatment phase
In this phase, treatment is started. The goal is of course (the best possible) restoration of consciousness. In the beginning, the treatment will always be intensive and high-frequency. In addition, during this phase, the possibilities for the follow-up process will be examined.

4. Discharge and aftercare phase
This phase is aimed at efficiently ensuring that the patient's discharge to another institution or residential environment proceeds.
