Looking back at the in-depth afternoon on Consciousness Diagnostics: insight into each other's practice
31 October 2025On Tuesday 21 October, the EENnacoma in-depth afternoon took place at WZH, location Leilinde, in The Hague. Despite the rainy day, there was a nice turnout from various care institutions.
Berno Overbeek (geriatric specialist and post-doctoral researcher) kicked off the afternoon with an introductory presentation on how complex it is to determine the level of consciousness in LBS and the importance of achieving uniformity and paying attention to new developments in this area.
Then we went into the use of the CRS-r on the VIN and the LIN. First, Tine Wieringa and Antonet Langermans (both therapists of stimulation and cognition at Libra Rehabilitation) talked about how the CRS-r is administered at the VIN, what the considerations have been and what bottlenecks are sometimes experienced. Subsequently, Sara Blom-Biesbrouck (physiotherapist at Accolade zorg) discussed the use of the CRS-r in the various LIN institutions affiliated with EENnacoma.

The participants then discussed possible themes in groups on which we want and need to achieve uniformity. This sparked interesting discussions. The recommendations that emerged from this will be discussed by a smaller group of experts to determine which positions we take and what we include in the care program.
During the second part of the afternoon, we discussed the SECONDS, a new measuring instrument. Wolmet Haksteen (physician-researcher at Amsterdam UMC) spoke about the use of the SECONDs in the ICU and its usefulness in severe brain injury. Attention was paid to the relevant question in which setting it is useful to use the SECONDs score.
The final piece of the afternoon was the use of the SECONDS in practice. Agnes Hamerpagt (geriatric physiotherapist at PZC Dordrecht) put the participants to work themselves by having them fill in the SECONDs score form on the basis of video images. This gave a good insight into the use of the measuring instrument and how complex assigning the correct score can be.
